Parks, peaks and Champions League

Happy Easter. I hope you all ate my share of easter chocolate.

It’s getting really fucking hot here!

I’ve started to do bits of touristy stuff on my days off. I’ve discovered that there are loads of really nice parks in HK, one with a small zoo and another (Hong Kong Park) with a pretty cool aviary. I also visited all the museums in Tsim Sha Tsui during ‘free museum Wednesday’s’ – It coincided with my day off… Honest! I’m not just a tight arse. The Space Museum is rather cool.

I also went on the Peak Tram, which was cool. Well, when I say I went on the Peak tram, I’m kind of lying really. I did go up to the peak, but not on the tram. It was a really hot Sunday evening when we went and the queue for the tram was ginormous. So… we got a taxi up and a bus back down – The bus ride down was one of the scariest/stomach churning bus rides I’ve ever been on and, yes, that includes the 42 and 192 bus routes in Manchester!

But anyway, I digress, the top of the Peak enables you to look down over HK. It’s an absolutely amazing view. As soon as we got to the top, it started chucking it down so we didn’t stay outside for very long. I want to go back up the Peak during the day at some stage.

The fact that the time back home has now caught up by an hour is making it (slightly – the Champions League games are still a 2.45am kick off here) easier to catch more of the football. Obviously, we won’t talk about the FA Cup game! My little brother, Ben, was chosen to help carry out the Champions League flag before the United/Chelsea semi at OT.  I was proud/jealous and slightly annoyed… He supports City! I suppose the occasion gave him a chance to watch Champions League football for the first and, probably, only time in a while (Spurs for forth place!). For those of you who don’t know, I have four younger brothers and they’re all very strange. One doesn’t like football, two support City and the youngest, Matthew, supports Liverpool. I’m not sure what went wrong with them (especially Matt). I blame the parents.

Sandbox are playing the Sounds from the Other City festival on 1st May. GO AND SEE THEM!

Myself, Locko (Sandbox axe-wielder) and Beetrootrabbit have started a new hash-tag game on Twitter – #bandsihavenotimefor – Join in with a band you don’t like… It’s much fun! I’ve been instructed by Locko to do a separate blog with my list, so I will… Soon.

What else… Oh, Record Store Day… I missed it this year. Gutted. No shops here were taking part. I’m also gutted about missing the Camden Crawl next weekend. But, I’ve managed to start catching up with Corrie online, which is a result!

No playlist (again). I really need to sort Spotify

Frankie and The Heartstrings – Hunger… It’s an ace album

REM – Collapse into Now… Their best album since ‘Up’. It’s ace, ace, ace.

Jimmy Eat World – Bleed American… Forgot just how good this album is

Feeder – Echo Park… I can’t believe this album was released 10 YEARS ago (this week!)

Maximo Park – Our Earthly Pleasures

The Cribs – Live at the Ritz

Pulled Apart By Horses – PABH

Happy Easter

P.S. Tar to Laura and Chris for the mail! It was a nice surprise. And Greg for the CD! 🙂

Radioactive rain and math rock

Alright,

I’ve not updated for a while – I’ve just been busy, plus I still have a crap internet connection at home. I need to sort it.

It’s v. cold here at the moment. Proper coat weather. I’ve been informed that it won’t be like this for much longer and before I know it, I’ll be complaining that’s it’s too hot.

People are starting to arrange to come and visit me, which is good! Em is here in May and my sister, Lauren, is coming to visit on her way to her gap year in New Zealand in June. I’ve been putting off doing a lot of the touristy things so that I can enjoy them when people come over.

I’ve also found out that Mr. Sam Atkinson is moving here with his girlfriend in August. This is also good news! To help me get through my Sandbox-less life, we’re planning to play some music. Our options are limited due to the fact that we’re both drummers and neither of us can sing. However, this is only a small obstacle and we’ve decided Sam will play guitar. We’ve already decided on our goal… We’ve set our sights on becoming ‘Hong Kong’s best expat Mancunian math rock band’. Can’t be hard to achieve that, surely? Idea’s for names are welcome.

Sandbox played their first gig without me the other week. By all accounts, it was a success. It probably helps that they didn’t have a tone deaf drummer ‘singing’ at the back of the stage. They’re playing again in May as part of Sounds from the Other City Festival. Also, Mr Bob Osbourne from Salford City Radio is doing some kind of Sandbox feature on his next radio show on 29th March. More info here. I’m hoping it’ll go up on Soundcloud or something so I can have a listen. Locko is doing an ace job of keeping me informed of all the Sandbox gubbins.

My first attempt at drumming in a few months ended in disaster. I ended up pulling a tendon or a muscle, or something or other in my arm. It swelled up really badly for a few days and I couldn’t straighten my arm, which was bizarre.

I finally got to see a western band play. I went to watch The Besnard Lakes at a venue called Hidden Agenda. The venue’s on the toop floor of a mill and is similar to Islington Mill (before the re-fit!). The Besnard Lakes were ace but there weren’t many people there to appreciate them – Defo no more than 100. The local support band, 31G, were also really good! The best local band I’ve seen by a mile – or a kilometre, as they use here. They had a very British indie sound. It’s hard to describe really. They reminded me a bit of Kasabian (first album stuff, when they were good. Before they disappeared up their own arses) They even played a Joy Division cover, which was… Interesting.

MGMT are playing here this week. I don’t particularly like them but was thinking of going ‘cos opportunities to see western bands are scarce. However, at £75 a ticket – YES, I’ve not put a £ sign by accident! – They can fuck off! Maroon 5 and Hurts are playing over the next few months but I’m not so desperate that I feel the need to put myself through seeing them both.

Somebody – I can’t link to her as she’s one of the few people I know who doesn’t use Facebook or Twitter. She’s strange – Anyway, she said I need to mention more about food… So, erm, yeah. I’m eating. I’ve eaten parts of animals that I never thought I’d eat. I’ve drawn the line at chicken’s feet. They’re supposed to be a taste sensation but I don’t fancy it myself.

I went to see another film – I Am Number Four. It’s not the usual type of film I’d see but I really enjoyed it.

The tsunami in Japan led to a hoax text message doing the rounds, warning people not to go out in the rain without umbrella’s due to radioactive rain or something. I was told about it and was shown the text message after arriving back to work soaking wet from the rain…

Don’t think there’s much else to report.

I can’t do a Spotify playlist because I’ve still not upgraded.
I’ve been giving the following a spin..

Beady Eye – Different Gear, Still Speeding (It’s actually quite good!)

Elbow – Build a Rocket Boys! (I’ve not listened to it enough. What isn’t sitting well with me about the album is that I feel the title is missing a comma…)

The Answering Machine – Lifeline

Feeder – Side By Side – Charity single for the Red Cross Japanese Tsunami fund. It’s a fucking brilliant song… But then I guess it’s predictable that I’d say that!

Fireworks, football and films

Howdy,

I’m a bit behind with my blog. I’ve been trying to calm down from ‘the incident’ that proved to be a very popular blog post!

Chinese New Year was cool. I had a few days off work. As well as going to the new year parade and watching the fireworks (which were very cool), I went to Hong Kong stadium to watch the finals of the Asian Challenge Cup. South China FC – Featuring Nicky Butt and Mateja Kežman! – were playing in the forth place play off against a Korean team, Ulsan Hyundai. South China got beat 4-2.

The final was a bit of a dull affair that finished 0-0 and went to penalties. Tianjin Teda beat Guangzhou Evergrande 5-3 in the shootout.  They got a big cup and a massive cheque for winning. The big cheque – which every player seemed more interested in having their picture taken with than the trophy – instantly reminded me of Richard Bond… I know he loves a big cheque as a prop!

Nicky Butt was treated like a God! Each time he touched the ball, everybody went crazy.  He did everything (literally), he took all the corners and free kicks and every time a South China player got the ball, they always seemed to be looking to pass it to Butt!

On the subject of football, I’ve found a great Irish bar around the corner from the flat that shows all sports live. If a football, rugby or cricket match is being played, they just seem to stay open and show it. I went to watch the United/City game in there. I don’t care if Rooney did shin it… What a goal!!

I’ve been to see a couple of films – 127 Hours (not great) , Little Fockers (not a patch on the first two) and Love and Other Drugs (very good). The cinema here is great – The seats are ginormous and at about £5.50, it’s fairly cheap.

Nothing much more to report – I’ve been working loads.

Sandbox are playing a gig on Monday (28th) at Joshua Brooks in Manchester. It’s in aid of a charity that is very important to me, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Lennie, Will and Paul will be playing an acoustic set. If you’re around, pop along for me. Please. All the info for the gig is here. 🙂

Finally, Spoitfy has gone again – I need to update the code to crack it. In the meantime, I’ve been listening to…

Frankie & the Heartstrings (Their new album is immense)

Boy Kill Boy (Forgot how good that album was)

Redstar (you won’t find that on Spotify… Or anywhere else, come to think of it!).

Feeder (naturally)

I’m desperately waiting for the my copy of the new Answering Machine album to arrive… PLEASE HURRY UP!

A harrowing tale of incarceration…

What you are about to read is a true story. I wish it was made up, I really, really do. But, no, I did get locked in my bathroom.

Now, I was going to keep this quiet at first as I’m fully aware I’ll be ridiculed for this until the day I die (and beyond, probably) but I can laugh about it now… I think. This is a blow-by-blow account – It’s quite long.

I’m all moved in to the flat now and have been adding bits to make it more homely etc. It was all going so well until Friday morning…

I got up at 8am and was really pleased with myself – I’d woken up without my alarm clock and I didn’t need to be in work until 10.30am so had bags of time to have a stress free morning and stop somewhere for some breakfast on my way to work, I got in the shower and didn’t, I repeat, DIDN’T, lock the door.

I got out of my shower and the bathroom door refused to open. It would not budge. At first, I was extremely calm about the situation, but this only lasted for about a minute, after which I began to pull frantically at the door. I put my dressing gown on went to get my mobile out of the pocket. I was still thinking rationally… I could call my boss. I’d given her the spare set of keys to my flat in case of emergencies. I’d call her and get her to come over and open the bathroom door from the outside. Excellent plan, but there was a problem… My mobile wasn’t in my pocket. I’d left it on the bed. This is when I started to panic… A lot!

I opened my bathroom window and stuck my head out. It’s the first time that I’ve actually opened the window and looked out. I’m on the 20th floor and nobody else had a window open. I looked down and the usually bustling street below was completely dead – It was Chinese new year.

I sat down for a few minutes to evaluate my predicament.  I came to the realisation that it was bad – I was in a spot of bother or, as the great Alan Partridge would put it – I was up slack alley.

There was nothing else for it. I stood on the toilet, put my head out of the window and shouted ‘HELP!’, I interspersed this with ‘hello’ in Chinese – That’s about as far as I’ve got with the language. There was a few people walking down the street but they couldn’t hear me! I was too high up and even if they did hear me, the chances of them seeing my little head sticking out of a tiny window 20 floors up were slim.

I carried on shouting and shouting and shouting. I had no comprehension of time as I had no phone or watch and I was losing my voice due to shouting.

Somebody in one of the blocks across the road opened their window and shouted something in Chinese. I’ve no idea what they shouted but, even with my extremely limited knowledge of the language, I realised that it didn’t appear to be very nice. I’d guess it was probably something along the lines of ‘shit the fuck up’. The reason I guess this is that immediately after shouting it, they proceeded to slam their window shut AND CLOSE THEIR CURTAINS. Yes, they closed their fucking curtains!

I was absolutely frantic now and my voice was completely shot. At this point, my alarm clock started going off in the bedroom. I knew it must be 930am, which meant I had been locked in there for over an hour. I also realised my new alarm clock doesn’t stop if you ignore it. It goes on, and on, and on until you turn it off.

Eventually, a window opened three floors below me and a young Chinese boy stuck his head out. I shouted hello and waved frantically at him. My hair was now completely dry because Id been in there for so long, but I had no comb or anything. I must have looked a picture. The Chinese boy just stared at me, open-mouthed. After what seemed like an eternity, I managed to persuade him to go and get him mum and I hoped to God that she could speak English. She stuck her head out her window and nodded at what I was saying. I explained that I was locked in my bathroom and she said she’d go and tell the concierge downstairs. I explained to her that we might need the fire brigade and she nodded and left to go downstairs. She left her window open and every now and again, her son would pop his out and stare at me a bit more. Nothing happened for a while and eventually, the boy, or his mum, shut their window. This caused me to worry again… Had she really gone downstairs or was she just humouring me?

I waited and waited and nothing happened. I decided that I should go back to shouting out of the window, just in case the woman downstairs had just gone to put the kettle on and laugh and me.

I could then hear my mobile going off. I realised that it was probably work wondering where I was. This now meant I had been in there for well OVER TWO HOURS.

Eventually, my doorbell starting ringing and then loud banging on my front door! How the fuck was I supposed to answer?!? I now had my alarm clock going off, my mobile ringing, my doorbell continuously ringing and banging on my front door. I was shouting that I was locked in the bathroom, blah, blah, blah. They couldn’t hear me.

I went back to the window and carried on shouting. After a while, I heard “hey. Are you ok?” I frantically looked outside at all the other apartment blocks around me but couldn’t see anyone. I shouted to ask where she was and eventually was able to make out a girls head sticking out of a window across and down the street. I couldn’t believe it! Finally, someone to help me! I shouted across the street and explained my predicament and explained that my boss had a spare set of keys. “No problem. I’ll go and get them”, said my new friend, Olivia. I shouted my boss’s home address and explained that it was only a five minute walk. I had to repeat certain parts every time a car went past but eventually I got it over to her. I said to her “Do you know where that is?” Olivia replied that, no, she didn’t know where it was. Shit. I needed a new plan.

I shouted across the company website address and asked Olivia to call the number on there, explain the problem and ask whoever picks up for my boss’s mobile number. Olivia went inside to get the info from the internet and came back to tell me she had found the number and was going to call. Excellent! I was relieved. Finally my ordeal was coming to an end.

At this point, I heard another noise. It was a man’s voice. ‘This is the police. Please let us in”.

A million things starting going through my mind. Why had the concierge called the police and not the fire brigade? Had the woman downstairs thought I was mad and was trying to jump from my  bathroom window? Were the Chinese police going to kick my door down, arrest me and put me in a cell because they though I was trying to kill myself?

I shouted (the best I could) that I couldn’t let them in as I was locked in the bathroom. The policeman shouted back “you’re locked in your bathroom?” I told him that, yes, I was really locked in my bathroom. The policeman shouted back to me “what shall we do?” The police were asking ME what THEY should do! Jesus.

I could hear muffled voices outside between the police and the concierge but they weren’t involving me. The banging started again on the front door and the policeman again asked me what they should do. I shouted to go and see if next door were in – I can see their front room window from my bathroom window so it meant we could talk to them properly. I knew they had knocked on next door as their dog started barking (yet another noise to add in to the mix).

Olivia shouted back from he window. She had got through to my boss and she was on her way over with the keys (I’ve since found out that the person who took the call at work thought it was a prank call at first. Olivia had to convince them it was genuine!)

Next thing I know, the police have got in to next door and have opened their bathroom window – The window was next to mine so I still couldn’t see who I was speaking to. I had to explain the whole bloody saga to them again and they explained that they were going to knock down my front door so they could get me out. They said they had to inform me before they did it as there would obviously be a large cost incurred to get it fixed again. I shouted “NO!” and explained that they didn’t have to do that as someone was on their way with keys to let me out.  This really confused the policeman – “So you’re not locked in the bathroom, sir?” Jesus. I explained that yes, I was locked in the bathroom BUT someone was on the way to sort it. The policeman went quiet for a few seconds and then said “so, we’ll break down the door to get you out”. NO! Please don’t. This was crazy as I now appeared to be happy to be locked in the bathroom.

I then head a key in the door and my boss shouted they were here and not to worry. They kicked my bathroom door down and I was free from my incarceration in the bathroom… Over three hours after I first went in there.

It took me a few hours and a lot of tea to calm down. I owe my freedom to Olivia!

A final piece of information… I’ve actually realised/been reminded that this was in fact the third time I have been locked in a bathroom…

Happy (Chinese) New Year

The Chinese New Year celebrations start on Thursday. It’s the year of the rabbit. Everywhere closes down for four days. I’m hoping to use the time off to do some proper exploring.

I finally have my ID card… I am an official citizen of Hong Kong. Scary/cool, I’m not sure which yet…

I moved in to my flat yesterday and am still unpacking stuff. I took two trips to Ikea in the space of three nights. The second trip was a huge mistake as it was on a Sunday and it was unbelievably busy. The trip was made slightly easier due to the fact that they had Mansun and The Bluetones on the PA system! The low point of both trips was that there was no time for my regulation portion of 20 meatballs.

I visited a supermarket for my first ‘big shop’ and it properly hit home that I was in a crazy foreign place. I was in there for over an hour and came out with noting that I actually went in for!

Over the past few days, I’ve started to really miss playing my drums. I visited Tommy Lee’s music shop to buy some sticks – I don’t think it’s owned by THE Tommy Lee from Mötley Crüe as it was full of other instruments besides drums. I don’t reckon he’s bother stocking anything other than huge, revolving drum kits – Anyway, I digress… I had to visit the shop a couple of times before they had my preferred drumsticks in stock. The good news is they’re cheap! My plan is to find a rehearsal room in the next week or so so I can go and have a play. In the meantime, my bed has become a makeshift drum kit.

This leads me right in to a blatant plug for a Sandbox gig! The three other ‘boxers will be playing an acoustic set as part of a charity gig for Cystic Fibrosis on 28th February at Joshua Brooks in Manchester. If you’re around, please go! It’s for a very good cause that is important to me as my cousin suffers from CF.

The low point of my week was the revelation that Spotify (or at least the free version) can only be used outside of the UK for 14 days! I am currently contemplating upgrading to the premium version. It means I can’t do a playlist this week. I’ve been listening to the following albums:

The Answering Machine – Another City, Another Sorry

Black Kids – Partie Traumatic

Charlatans – Us and Us Only

Larrikin Love – The Freedom Spark

Indie bands and Disney weddings

I finally signed for a flat today. I actually found the flat well over a week ago and knew straightaway that it was the one I wanted. It was newly refurbished and was a million times better than many others that I’d seen. I gambled that it would still be available and decided to spend a few more days looking at other places. I couldn’t find anywhere that I liked more and, luckily, it was still available. Today, I handed over a huge chunk of $’s and I move in on 1st Feb.

I went to my first gig here on Friday night. It was over the other side of the water in Tsim Sha Tsui but it felt a bit like home because it was at the Manchester United Restaurant and Bar!

The bands that I saw were hit and miss. According to their blurb, one of the bands (Homeless Alien) describe themselves at ‘Britrock’ and are supposedly (and I quote) “… inspired by British rock legends in 90s, such as Radiohead, Mansun.” Now, this sentence (minus the Radiohead bit) is music to my ears… Any person or band who describes Mansun as rock legends are alright by me – I love Mansun. However, I missed Homeless Alien so will have to catch them next time L. It doesn’t matter what they sound like though, they’ve already won me over.

What else have I done? I’ve been filling in forms so I can use my UK driving license here. Oh yeah, I went to a wedding in Disneyland on Sunday! It was very cool and very strange in equal measures.

In other news, I think I may have found why I’ve been having headache’s for the past week or so – It may be down to caffeine withdrawal! It was pointed out to me this afternoon that I’ve been using decaf teabags since I arrived here. This means that the last cup of proper tea I had was at the airport. Oh!

Here’s my Spotify playlist for this blog. Enjoy.

Laters,

Howdy

So, it’s the end of my first week in Hong Kong and people keep telling me that I should start a blog. I dunno who’ll read it or, more importantly, what the Hell I’ll write, but I’ve buckled under peer pressure. So here goes…

My first few days consisted of applying for a Chinese ID card, opening a bank account and trying to find somewhere to live. Accommodation in HK is VERY fucking expensive and the standard varies massively… I’ve looked at some real shit holes and some really cool places. At the moment, I’m weighing up living near work in the centre of Wanchai or moving out towards the sea where it’s quieter and you get more space for your money but it means I’ll have to commute for 45 mins to work. As anyone who knows me properly will testify, I’ve been very lucky with my commutes to work over the last few years. Anything over 90 seconds is just far too much!

My bosses partner is a helicopter pilot and he took me on an hour long flight over HK on Sunday. It was pretty spectacular. I’ve added a few pics.

I’ve decided to create a Spotify playlist to go with each blog. That way, if I have nothing interesting to say, I can still post something worthwhile. Here’s some stuff I was listening to on the flight over…

That’s enough for now.

Can somebody let me know when the Tories have fucked off and it’s safe to come home, please. Thank you.

See you soon.
